Contact A Family will give a free Makaton Taster Workshop for Families and Carers at Toby House on Monday May 22nd.
This free session will give you a practical insight into what Makaton is and who uses it. You’ll also have the opportunity to learn approximately 30 signs and symbols.
And you’ll get handouts about everything you’ve learned to take home and share. Plus you’ll get some general information about further training and resources.
The workshop will be conducted by Shona Chambers, CAF North East‘s Parent Adviser and Regional Makaton Tutor.

Makaton is a language programme that uses sign language and pictorial symbols to communicate.
It’s a support for spoken language rather than a replacement. The method uses signs and symbols in spoken word order alongside speech and at the same time.
It allows children and adults to communicate straight away. Eventually the signs and symbols might be dropped as spoken language develops. This makes it a useful tool for working with children on the autism spectrum.
