We’re bringing our unique services to Tyneside!

Friday, January 10, 2020, marked a fantastic development in the history of The Toby Henderson Trust.

In collaboration with Autism In Mind, South Tyneside Clinical Commissioning Group and South Tyneside Council, we opened the new Autism Hub on Gordon Street in South Shields.

A need for more help for those with autism

We are so privileged, grateful and excited to be part of this innovative new venture! Recognising that the autism diagnosis rates in South Tyneside were higher than the national average, South Tyneside council have taken a forward-thinking approach to providing services for the autism community now and in the future.

The idea for the Autism Hub came about after people told the council that they felt there was a lack of support in the borough for people with autism and their families. The focus of NHS services is mainly on diagnosis, and this can take months or even years. Meanwhile, those who feel they or their child has autism are unable to access the help and services that could make a huge difference in their lives.

No diagnosis or referral necessary!

The Autism Hub is unique to South Tyneside, and the services it provides are free to all families who have a South Tyneside postcode. It provides drop-in sessions for the parents and family of children and young people up until the age of 18, without requiring a referral or even a confirmed autism diagnosis.

Autism In Mind provides support on Thursdays and Fridays for adults (16+) with ASD, whilst The Toby Henderson Trust delivers services on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for families of children and young people on the autism spectrum.

A toolbox of services and advice

We’re thrilled that we will now be able to provide a fantastic resource centre for the people of South Tyneside, with psychotherapeutic services, workshops and support groups. We’ll also be using our ‘experts by experience’ knowledge to provide families with our toolbox of strategies and techniques to support their children with ASD in the best way possible. We’re also really pleased that the Hub will be able to offer support all the way from childhood to adulthood.

Watch us grow!

We’ve already had some great feedback about the new Autism Hub! One parent told us, “I feel that you understand the problems and have given me information. We are going back home positive and don’t feel lonely because you are here.”

We can’t wait to see how the Autism Hub grows and develops, and we are so pleased that we can be there to support the South Tyneside community!
