Makaton is a language programme that uses sign language and pictorial symbols to communicate. It is support for spoken language rather than a replacement, so the the signs and symbols are used in spoken word order alongside speech, at the same time.
Using Makaton allows children and adults to communicate straight away. Eventually the signs and symbols might be dropped as spoken language is developed. This makes it a useful tool for working with children on the autism Spectrum.
Shona Chambers, North East Parent Adviser and Regional Makaton Tutor at Contact A Family will be giving a Makaton workshop for professionals at Toby House on Wednesday March 22nd. This session provides a practical insight into what Makaton is and who uses it, with the added opportunity to learn approximately 30 signs and symbols too.
This fun and interactive session also provides the opportunity to discuss ideas on how you could use Makaton.
Participants will receive handouts covering the vocabulary they have learned and general information regarding further Makaton training and Makaton resources.
Places cost £20.00 per person. The workshop is open to any professional across the North East.
